I’m Kylie Madry, a recent graduate of Southern Methodist University, with majors in journalism and political science and a minor in Spanish.

After graduation I moved to Mexico City, diving headfirst into the worlds of nonprofit communications and freelancing. I’m currently looking for more freelance opportunities.

I gained real, newsroom experience at The Dallas Morning Newswhere I was a three-time breaking news intern (fall 2016, summer 2017 and fall 2017). To read some of my favorite clips from the DMN, click here.

While at SMU, I worked my way up The Daily Campus ladder as a contributing writer, interactive editor and then editor-in-chief. It was my year as editor that put me to task, as I ultimately had to lead my staff into the difficult transition from an independent student media into a department-run operation. I learned a lot of hard lessons through the year, and am thankful that our newsroom was able to spark the #SaveStudentNewsrooms movement.

I’ve won awards for my news writing, sports writing and page design at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) conference, with The Daily Campus and the Rotunda yearbook. My 2016-2017 Rotunda writing also received certificates of merit from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Golden Circle. In 2018, I was named Outstanding Senior in Print Journalism and Meadows Outstanding Senior Woman by SMU.

My research, conducted during the summer of 2017, earned me the title of the Meadows School of the Arts’ first Summer Research Fellow. The resulting paper, written with two other students and professors Camille Kraeplin and Jared Schroeder, also won top paper in the Law and Policy division of the 2018 AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication) Southeast Colloquium. It was recently published under the title “Give Me A ©: Refashioning the Supreme Court’s Decision in Star Athletica v. Varsity Into an Art-First Approach to Copyright Protection for Fashion Designers” in the UCLA Entertainment Law Review. Read more about my work here.

I also have broadcast experience. In fall of 2015, I worked twice weekly between SMU-TV’s The Daily Update, Punto and Real TalkIn July 2016, I attended the Republican National Convention as a runner for CNN, primarily working with the CNN International and CNN en Español teams.
